Kathryn George, Sterling Heights Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem, has announced her candidacy for Macomb County Probate Judge.
George is a candidate for the position that will open after Probate Judge James Nowicki retires December 31st, 2002.
George, 51, a registered nurse since 1973, has been a practicing attorney in Macomb County for 12 years and is a councilwoman in Sterling Heights for the last 2½ years.
Beacuse she was the highest vote-getter in last year's City Council election, George now serves as Mayor Pro Tem.
A member of St. Malachy Church in Sterling Heights and St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Warren, George also served on the State of Michigan Worker's Compensation Appeal Board, a quasi-judicial position that makes decisions on worker's compensation appeals of Magistrate's decisions.
She was also appointed by the Board of Law Examiners to grade licensing exams for attorneys.
"My legal, political and quasi-judicial experience prepares me very well to serve as Probate Court Judge." says George, who has handled many cases in Macomb County Probate Court.
The Probate Court has two divisions: Wills, Estates and Mental.
George has also served on the faculty of Oakland County Community College School of Nursing and as chair of the Sterling Heights Telecommunication Commission and the Macomb County Bar Association's Cable Commission.
She is an active member of the Base Community Council of Selfridge Air National Guard Base and serves on the group's membership committee.
George also serves on the Advisory Board and Ethics Committee for Advanced Professional Home Health Care, Inc. She is also Vice-President of the Ukrainian American Bar Association.
